This cross, producing this lurcher breed goes back to the 14th Century.
It is believed that the English and Scottish governments banned commoners from owning sight-hounds, like Irish Wolfhounds and Scottish Deerhounds. At that time, only the aristocrats could own these noble Hound breeds, and they were used for hunting on the lands and estates. It was a crime for the general population to hunt and kill game on lands owned by the nobility, and the punishments if caught were severe.
To produce their own hunting dogs, peasants who worked the lands with shepherd dogs would sneak them in to be mated. Producing the first lurchers; the ideal mix of the physique and instincts of a noble hound and the trainability and drive of a shepherd.
